The intricate granulation on the polished base –– the kind of construct that resembles the rim of a cycle wheel –– is as important a detail as the beautifully buffed underside of the kankan from the deep channel structure of which rises a ring of stick figures firmly standing their ground, holding hands and with sphere-heads held bright and high. The effect, even though the ornament is more a choori than a kankan, is sublime. The jewel is delicate and light, the elegance of its craftsmanship shining forth more on your hands than, here, in this photograph, despite the artistic way in which they've been posed for the shot.
These are not jewels that participate in the race for most stares attracted or for that matter come out trumps when competing for a prize for the goyna of the season because, simply, they are of the kind that are for all seasons and for all but the most busy of hands that may not have time enough to wear on them these bangles of unity and eternal life.
An austere jewel whose power comes as much from its monastic form as from its clear symbolism, the skillfully handcrafted Ekjot Kankan, in natural yellow guinea gold, speaks of everlasting unity in a voice so soft and gentle that, through a scared and screaming world, even the Gods in the far heavens can hear.
